Engineering is not Theory

I want to encourage our young ones especially those in engineering careers to balance between academic and professional expertise.
I don't know if it makes sense to many outside engineering fields. However, many of our graduands have academic papers that they cannot defend.
In my over a decade career, I have interacted with very bright minds in engineering but very poor in technical workmanship. I remember one specific case of a Masters in Mechanical Engineering graduate who could hardly transfer the theory into practice. He could barely adjust anything but could explain the principle of operation. Comparing the academic papers with his technical skills was like day and night.
My advice is simple; learn how it is done, get good apprenticeship then further your education. Engineering is not Theory!
